About Pearl

What is the difference between saltwater and freshwater pearls?

Saltwater pearls are smaller in size, but they typically have a higher luster and a more radiant appearance due to their dense and uniform nacre layer.
They are also relatively scarce compared to freshwater pearls, making them more valuable in the market and increasing their collectability and investment value.

How to identify real saltwater pearls?

Genuine saltwater pearls typically have excellent luster and good light reflection. They should reflect bright, clear light rather than appearing dull.
Saltwater pearls are usually relatively lightweight, so if you feel that the pearls are heavy, it might indicate the presence of other substances.
Genuine saltwater pearls should give a cool and smooth touch.

What are Akoya pearls?

Akoya pearls are one of the earliest commercially cultivated saltwater pearls, known for their elegant appearance and high quality. They are produced by the Mikimoto oyster (Pinctada fucata martensii).
Akoya pearls are renowned for their natural white color and luster, making them popular for creating fine pearl jewelry such as necklaces, earrings, and bracelets. With an average diameter ranging from 7 to 8 millimeters, Akoya pearl jewelry is often chosen as a sophisticated and luxurious gift or collectible item.

Is it normal for Akoya pearls to have blemishes?

Akoya pearls may have some minor imperfections, which is normal. The complex formation process of Akoya pearls can result in minor flaws or irregularities such as small indentations, uneven color, or tiny surface blemishes.
These imperfections can be caused by foreign substances or external factors. HELAS chooses the top 1% of saltwater pearls, which have imperfections at such a micro level that they are hard to notice with the naked eye.

Is the luster of a saltwater pearl considered one of its most important characteristics?

Yes, the luster of saltwater pearls is considered one of their most important characteristics. High-quality saltwater pearls have a bright, sharp luster with rich color and noticeable refractive effects. This sparkling appearance makes them vibrant, dynamic, and captivating.

Product

Are you using vermeil or plated gold in your jewlery?

Never! Our jewelry is made out of 18k solid gold. (Of course, some specially marked ones will use 925 sterling silver.)

Are your gold conflict-free? Is the gold you are using sustainable?

Our traceable gold, also known as ‘green gold’, comes from conflict-free regions, adhering to strict environmental and human rights policies.

Which one should I choose, 14K or 18K?

18K gold contains a higher percentage of pure gold (75%) compared to 14K gold (58.3%), making it more valuable and renowned for its enduring luster. The higher gold content in 18K offers greater resistance to tarnishing and is more hypoallergenic, making it an excellent choice for those with sensitive skin.

Do the pearls fall off easily?

Pearl jewelry is crafted using professional drilling and German adhesive techniques, securing the pearls in place with metal pins and specialized glue. You can wear them for extended periods without worrying about them falling off.

Do pearl items have certificates?

Each piece of pearl jewelry includes an identification certificate. We provide Chinese-related certificates due to the Main Origin of Akoya Pearls and labor costs.
Although these certificates are internationally recognized for quality testing and certification, they are only available upon request.
HELAS keeps certificates on file in necessary situations but does not ship products with certificates by default.

Maintenance

When wearing saltwater pearls, it's best to avoid pairing them with metal chains or other hard items that may risk damaging them.

Is there any way to clean saltwater pearls?

Avoid immersing saltwater pearls in water for extended periods as it can damage them. Instead, use a mild soapy water solution or pearl-specific cleaner. Gently wipe the surface of the pearls with a soft cloth or sponge dipped in the mixture, and then let them air dry on a clean surface. Avoid using cleansers with chemicals or abrasives as they can harm the pearls.

How to maintain saltwater pearls?

To care for saltwater pearls, avoid exposing them to chemicals like perfume, cosmetics, and cleaners, as they can damage the surface.
Keep them away from extreme temperatures to prevent discoloration or damage.
Store them in a dry, clean jewelry box, preferably individually.
Regular wear helps pearls maintain their luster as the body's natural oils nourish them.

Can pearl earrings be worn to bathe and sleep?

It is advisable to remove pearl earrings when bathing or sleeping to prevent unnecessary damage or loss. Water, soap, shampoo, cleaners, hot water, steam, and excessive friction can negatively affect the surface of pearls, causing them to lose their luster or become damaged.

Value

What factors affect the price of saltwater pearls?

Common factors that can influence the price of saltwater pearls include: luster and quality, pearl type and origin, pearl size, pearl shape and color, jewelry craftsmanship and design, and market supply and demand.

Does the size of the pearl affect the price?

Larger saltwater pearls are more expensive because they are rarer. Large saltwater pearls typically refer to pearls with a diameter of 8 mm or more, and larger sizes are often more valuable and rare.
The formation process for saltwater pearls is slower and more complex, resulting in less production of large saltwater pearls.

What is the value preservation of saltwater pearls?

Saltwater pearls are often considered stable and valuable jewelry, but it's important to note that the jewelry market fluctuates, and prices can be affected by factors like supply, demand, economic conditions, and trends. Therefore, the investment value of any jewelry cannot be guaranteed to remain constant.
